Profiel

De neurochirurgie is een vak waarbij je tot in de kern van de mens komt. Het vak brengt een aantal mooie aspecten samen waarbij enerzijds handvaardigheid een belangrijk aspect vormt, waarmee het nog echt een ‘ambacht’ is. Anderzijds zijn de psychologische aspecten van aandoeningen aan het centraal en perifeer zenuwstelsel van groot belang. Een neurochirurg opereert in de hersenen, het ruggenmerg en de zenuwen. Hiermee hebben de aandoeningen op deze plekken vaak grote invloed op het dagelijks leven van patiënten. Het doel is dan ook om in samenspraak met patiënten een geschikte (operatieve) oplossing te vinden voor hun probleem. Deze combinatie tussen technisch handelen en maatwerk leveren voor het specifieke probleem van de individuele patiënt spreekt mij zo aan in dit vak.

Het is bijzonder om dit werk te doen en samen met de patiënt te beslissen over de behandeling van hun aandoening, met steeds meer nadruk op nieuwe technologieën en geavanceerde scans. Ook maak ik gebruik van onderzoek om de zorg te verbeteren en behandelingen te personaliseren voor elke patiënt.
